today we learned about the parts of soil, what makes a good soil, and how water drains through various kinds of soils. We also got to make our own soil and test it for water retention. Mr. Doug had different soil types in containers. We able to watch the water seep down through the soil. He had buckets that contained clay, sand, silt with hay mulch and peat moss in the wagon.
Then we went for a walk through the garden to see the various soils. We learned that we were actually walking on a "beach" with sand just a couple of feet below our feet. Some of us even got to stand on the "beach".
