River Valley Nature Journaling

RV Nature Journaling
Next Gathering on April 27 at RV Area Community Gardens
Weekly from 9 - 10:30 am

This project is made possible in part by a grant provided by River Valley ARTS.

River Valley Area Community Gardens is pleased to announce a new nature experience, River Valley Nature Journaling, facilitated by Kay Balink.  Nature Journaling is a fun and challenging way to connect with nature and develop curiosity and knowledge of nature.  Kay will meet with participanats at the River Valley Area Community Gardens, 900 N. Westmor St behind Ring Brothers Classic Auto on Saturday mornings from 9-10:30 AM weekly.  Next meeting is April 27.   All ages, families (children with a parent) and individuals are welcome to participate.
No experience is necessary. Minimal supplies such as a pencil and piece of paper, something firm to write on like a clipboard /book /piece of cardboard are needed to start.  Participants may want to bring a blanket to sit on while making your observations.

Nature Journaling

Nature Journaling was initiated by John Muir Laws,  a naturalist supreme, and an innovative educator, as well as a talented artist who combined his passions founding the Nature Journaling movement. He subsequently wrote The Laws Book on Nature Journaling and Drawing. about 30 years ago.  The activity is now world-wide with over a million active participants. His mantra is “nature education available to all” and has developed, along with others, methods for making this accessible to all ages, walks of life, cultures and educations.

Journaling develops a concerted attention to nature and builds a relationship of curiosity, resilience and patience that can extend to other parts of our lives.

As we experience some of nature’s incredible moments as well as the more subtle, journaling solidifies the memory into our minds. This is the purpose of nature journaling.

Supplies and Resources

Nature Journaling can be as minimal or as complicated as you want to make it.

A minimal journaling kit inclueds a pencil and piece of paper with something firm to write on like a clipboard / book / piece of cardboard.

Other art supplies may include crayons, colored pencils, sharpies, a child's watercolor set,, or acrylic pens, and oils for the more advanced artist.

The Journalling can be as simple as written notes and notations of rain, snow, temperaturess or sketches of plants, birds, insects, flowers whatever happens to be in your view.

The journals can be simple pieces of paper put in a notebook or the use of a notebook or sketch book

For more information, please check the Journaling Resources page for books, videos, web pages  for more ideas and information on nature journaling.
